In order to avoid the need for priming, the Aquamist water
pump should be installed below the water tank. Given that the washer fluid
reservoir on an MR2 Turbo is mounted as low on the chassis as you can go,
the only reasonable mounting location for the Aquamist pump that I could
think of is the vehicle
undercovers. Although strong, the undercovers are plastic and flexible
enough to attenuate the sound that the Aquamist pump makes during
operation.
The washer fluid reservoir is attached to the front right corner of the
chassis below the front fuse box. There is sufficient space in front of
and below the reservoir inside the bumper cavity for the Aquamist water pump. To access this space,
lift the right front of the car and place a jack stand under the car.
Remove the right front tire to allow you to access and remove the wheel
well cover that surrounds it. You will have to loosen several bolts and
screws of different sizes. Set them down in a recognizable pattern as you remove them
that will allow you to easily put them back in the same holes they
came out of.
With the wheel well cover off, you will see the bottom of the washer
fluid reservoir, the washer pump motor and the 6mm water line connected to
it. Remove the right front undercover. Pull the 6mm water line from the
washer pump motor and collect the washer fluid in the reservoir and the
water line in a suitable container. Keep in mind that a full reservoir
will have over a gallon of fluid in it, so use a clean 2 gallon pan or
larger if you wish to reclaim the fluid to refill the reservoir after
the installation. Push the hose back on the washer pump motor when all the
fluid has drained.
Using the base of the Aquamist pump, locate a suitable position on the
undercover for the pump and trace out an appropriate location for the four bolts
that will secure the Aquamist pump to the undercover. Drill holes
and attach the pump to the undercover with the bolt heads towards the
outside of the vehicle and the nuts towards the pump. Place the
undercover with the Aquamist pump on the ground beneath where the
undercover goes on the car and in the appropriate orientation it will go
back on.
Locate the Aquamist wiring harness supplied with the Aquamist
kit. There is a heavy gauge green wire which goes to one end of the
three-prong connector. There is a thinner gauge wire also
attached to the same prong. This thinner wire is not
needed. Cut it as close as possible to the connector being careful not to
nick or damage the thicker gauge green wire.
Take out the spare tire and remove the plastic cover behind it to expose the
brake booster and the power steering unit (if you have one). Locate the wiring harness that passes from the front cargo compartment
through the front bulkhead near the right headlight towards the bumper. Make a small hole in the
rubber grommet and pull the Aquamist wiring harness through it (you will have to
pull the grommet off and feed the wires from the other side). Feed the
connector down to the location where the Aquamist pump will be located.
Connect the connector to the Aquamist pump. Optionally, you can protect
the wires with plastic wire wrap.
Find a suitable position near the the wiring harness hole to pass the
12' long 1/8" Autometer tube. Use an appropriate rubber grommet to protect the tube from the metal edge of the
hole and drill a suitable sized hole for the grommet. Snap the grommet
into the hole and feed enough
of the 1/8" tube through it to reach the location where the pump is
sitting.
Take the adaptor that came with the Aquamist pump off on the outlet
(the long side) of the pump. Screw the 1/8" NPT to BSPT adapter on
this outlet pipe. Use the 1/8" NPT adaptor supplied with the Autometer
tube to attach the 1/8" tube to the outlet pipe.
Cut the 6mm wiper fluid hose about 1-2" from the washer pump motor
and attach a 6mm tee to it. Use the 6mm tube and the adapter supplied
with the Aquamist kit to connect the washer fluid supply to the intake
pipe of the Aquamist pump. Place the water filter supplied with the
Aquamist kit in line with the 6mm intake tube to prevent any particles
that may fall into the washer fluid reservoir from damaging the Aquamist
pump. Add in a small amount of washer fluid to the
reservoir and squirt some fluid on the windshield to make sure that the
wiper wash system still works and that there are no leaks in the system.
If there are no leaks you can refill the reservoir.
Carefully raise the undercover with the Aquamist pump into place and
bolt it back on the car. Arrange the extra length of hose and wire in a neat loop (you
don't want to pull all the slack back out because you may need to remove
the undercover in the future). Put the wheel well back in place and
reattach it to the car. Put the tire back on and lower the car to the
ground. Do not put the plastic cover and spare tire back in, as you will
need to finish the job of running the 1/8" tube to the engine bay as
described in the water line section and of
wiring the Aquamist pump as described in the wiring
section first.
