MR2 HKS EVC IV Installation: Installation

The main difficulty installing the EVC IV is getting the hoses off the turbo actuator and back on. Start by taking off the air intake all the way to the turbo
(do not touch the screws on the AFM connector, there is a clip that holds
it in place). Find a good place to put the solenoid which must be mounted with the
three ports pointing upwards. The side of the AFM or the bracket that holds the coolant filler
cap are good locations. It should not be placed more than 3 feet from the turbo actuator.
Remove the nuts holding the heat shield between the engine bay and the center chassis tube where the gas tank resides.
Remove the center console and the trim piece around the stereo. Take the connector on the
EVC IV wiring harness that goes from the engine bay to the passenger cabin and write down the
locations of the wires that go to the connector that the ECV IV computer plugs into.
Carefully extract the pins out of the connector (they are held on by
little plastic hooks that can be pulled down carefully with a toothpick or
jeweler's screwdriver). Behind the place where the storage box at the back of the center console
goes there is a rubber grommet through which wire harness passes from the center console toward the engine bay. Carefully poke a hole in the rubber
grommet and push a long stiff wire such as that found on a wire hanger
through the grommet from the cabin side. Then, go to the engine bay and
carefully pull the wire out enough to reach. Tape the pins that you pulled
out of the EVC IV connector to the stiff wire tightly with electrical
tape. Pull the stiff wire back through the grommet carefully from the
cabin and pull the harness through into the cabin so that it reaches the
dashboard. Peel the electrical tape off to free the harness and push the pins back into the connector in the same holes they were in before.
Optionally, obtain a length of plastic protector tubing and slide it onto
the part of the harness that passes by the heat slides and into the engine
bay. Bolt the heat shield back in place. Run the harness inside the car to where you will attach the EVC
IV controller. Secure the EVC IV computer with the double sided tape
provided or a couple of strips of Velcro tape. Make sure the switch on the back
of the unit is set to "SW." Find a suitable source of switched power (such as the gray wire going to the radio) and ground (any bolt on the chassis) and properly splice the EVC
IV power wires to them. Plug the harness to the computer. Replace the center console and radio trim panel back on.
Locate the short hose that goes from the port just at the outlet of the turbo to the left
port on the turbo actuator right beside the turbo towards the engine. Pull this hose off and save the clamps. Now take a
length of 6mm hose long enough to reach from the turbo outlet port to the
EVC IV solenoid (don't forget the hose needs to route around the air
intake when it is back in place) and slide one of the clamps you took off onto it, squirt
a tiny bit of lubricant on the inside of it and push that end of it onto the
port on the turbo outlet. Get it as far on as possible to where the old hose was and then slide the clamp on to seal it tight. Take the larger of the two air filters that came with the EVC
IV and slide it onto the other end of the hose. Take a very short piece of
6mm hose and slide it onto the other end of the larger filter. Slide the other end of the short hose onto the bigger
port labeled "2" on the EVC IV solenoid (this will be the outside large
port, not the middle one). Prepare another length of 6mm hose long enough to reach from the actuator to the solenoid and this time slide it onto the left
port on the actuator and clamp it. Route the other end of the hose to the middle port labeled "3" on the
EVC IV solenoid. Take the tee vacuum hose connector supplied with the EVC
IV and carefully cut the vacuum hose that goes from the intake manifold to your aftermarket BOV or stock bypass valve. Slide the tee connector onto the ends of that hose.
Prepare a length of new 4mm hose long enough to reach from the tee to the solenoid and slide one end of the hose onto the tee and the other to the smaller air filter supplied with the EVC
IV. Take a short piece of 4mm hose and attach it between the other end of the filter
and the port on the EVC IV solenoid labeled "1."
Put the air intake back on. Double check your work to make sure you haven't left anything disconnected or forgotten to tighten any clamps.
Raise the back of the car on ramps or jack it up a bit and put jack stands under it and slide under it from the back until you can look up between the exhaust and the transmission and see the bottom of the intake manifold. You will see a purple
cylinder (the TVIS vacuum tank) and between the canister and the engine block
there is a smaller cylindrical thing with two hoses and an electrical connector attached to it. Pull the electrical connector off and use electrical tape to tape up the end of the connector you took off to be sure it
does not ever make electrical contact with anything. Use a zip tie to secure it so that it
will not flop around or hang down. You have now disabled the turbo VSV.
Lower the car back to the ground.
Your EVC IV is now connected and ready to set up. You will not be able to boost over 0.75 bar without hitting fuel cut. See
the fuel cut primer for more information fuel
cut and options for defeating it.
